Mrs. Margaret Court won the Australian Women's Open Tennis Championships for the eleventh time on Monday (1 January).
Mrs. Court beat Yvonne Goolagong 6-4, 7-5 in 64 minutes at Melbourne's Koogong Tennis Club.
In spits of suffering from strained stomach muscles, the 30 year-old Mrs. Court was always in command. Miss. Goolagong, aged 21 had a chance to even the match at one-set-all in the ninth game. But she faulted on service and Mrs. Court went on to win the set and match.
Mrs. Court received a cheque for 4,500 Australian dollars (2,100 pounds sterling) and Miss. Goolagong 2,700 dollars (1,250 pounds sterling).
SYNOPSIS: Two former Wimbledon Champions, 30-year-old Margaret Court and 21-year-old Yvonne Goolagong fought out the final of the Australian Women's Open Tennis Championships in Melbourne on Monday. Mrs. Court was in command for most of the match.
Serving from the far end Mrs. Court had few problems, though Miss. Goolagong won this point.
After losing the first set 6-4 Miss. Goolagong had a chance to even the match at one set all. But Mrs. Court proved too strong.
Mrs. Court went on to win 6-4, 7-5 in 64 minutes.
