  • Description

In the Vietnamese city of Saigon last week tens of thousands of Vietnamese women took part in a colourful rally to mark the 6th anniversary of International Women's Day and the 15th anniversary of the South Vietnamese Women's Liberation Day.

South Vietnamese Women's Day marks the uprising of the Trung sisters - two heroines who defeated Chinese aggressors and drove them out of Vietnam in early years of the first century.

Addressing the rally Chairman of the South Vietnamese National Liberation Front, Nguyen Huu Tho, said that women had been the ones to suffer most in the last Vietnamese war and praised them as "heroic, indomitable, faithful and versatile".

After Mr. Tho's speech women dressed in gaily coloured Ao-Dai costumes representing all sections of the female community - including Catholic and Buddhist nuns - paraded past the former Independence Palace and through the streets of Saigon.
