    West German Chancellor Adenauer at the opening of the ninth party conference of the Christian Democrats at Karlsruhe Apr 27 said West Germany must remain strong to fight off the menace of Communism in particular over the latest Soviet threat over Berlin.

    The Chancellor at 84 used the occasion to open his campaign for fourth term as chancellor. He and his Christian Democrats were prod of their achievements in West German recovery and trading. The Common Market, he said, was now a foundation stone of his policy to achieve European solidarity both economically and politically. West Germany must work diligently and seriously with the members of the European Free Trade Association to seek a common understanding, he said.

    Among the 533 delegate at the opening were Defence Minister Strauss, Finance Minister Erhard, Foreign Minister von Brentano: among the guests were Bundeswehr Bishop Kunst, UK Conservative MP Ridsdale and other observers from seven European nations.
