American Johnny Miller snatched the richest prize in golf history when he won the Sun City Million Dollar Challenge after a nine-hole play-off against Spaniard Severiano Ballesteros on Sunday (3 January). Miller took home 500,000 US dollars after the two-hour sudden death play-off. Miller and Ballesteros were level after 72 holes. Three times they had to return to the 16th, 17th and 18th tees. In the end, the match was clinched when Ballesteros took three putts from 15 yards as he played the 18th hole for the fourth time that day. After more than six hours on the course, it was all over for Severiano Ballesteros when Miller took the biggest purse the golfing world has ever known.
