  • Description

ANTI-BRITISH DEMONSTRATIONS SPREAD THROUGHOUT CYPRUS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN THE WAKE OF THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT'S PROTEST TO BRITAIN OVER THE ALLEGED CONDUCT OF A DETAINED SERVICEMAN IT CLAIMED HAD BEEN AIDING THE "TURKISH TERRORISTS".

THE LARGEST DEMONSTRATION ON THE ISLAND TOOK PLACE IN THE CAPITAL, NICOSIA WHERE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED BANNERS READING "WE DEMAND BRITISH SOLDIERS OUT OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE" AND "KICK OUT BRITISH FROM PEACE FORCES."
THE SERVICEMAN CONCERNED IN THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT'S COMPLAINT IS SENIOR AIRCRAFTSMAN KEITH MARLEY. HE AND HIS WIFE APPEARED IN COURT ON WEDNESDAY AND THE CYPRUS INTERIOR MINISTER TOLD NEWSMEN HE HAD CONFESSED TO CARRYING OUT "TERRORIST MISSIONS". HE HAS BEEN REMANDED IN CUSTODY FOR EIGHT DAYS WHILE HIS WIFE HAS BEEN RELEASED ON A BAIL OF TWO HUNDRED POUNDS.

MAKING THE CYPRIOT PROTEST, THE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. SPYROS KYPRIANOU TOLD MAJOR-GENERAL WILLIAM BISHOP, THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER THAT SUCH ACTIONS ON THE PART OF MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH FORCES "UNDERMINE SERIOUSLY THE RELATIONS BETWEEN CYPRUS AND GREAT BRITAIN."
(MEANWHILE ANTI-BRITISH FEELING ON THE ISLAND IS REPORTED TO BE RUNNING VERY HIGH AFTER THE ARREST OF TWO BRITISH SOLDIERS WHO REFUSED TO ALLOW GREEK CYPRIOT POLICE TO INSPECT OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS THEY WERE CARRYING. THE TWO MEN WERE RELEASED AFTER BEING DETAINED FOR NEARLY TEN HOURS. BRITISH MILITARY SOURCES SAID THAT VEHICLES CARRYING BRITISH PERSONNEL HAD BEEN HELD UP AT VARIOUS POINTS AROUND THE ISLAND YESTERDAY AND SEARCHED. THERE ARE ABOUT TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED BRITISH SOLDIERS IN THE SEVEN THOUSAND STRONG UNITED NATIONS FORCE.)
