  • Description

After the nuclear explosion scare at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, late June 7, safety checks were made and a probe begun into the cause of the accident.

As final tests with geiger counters continued in and around the wreckage of the "Bomarc" missile launching shelter, Air Force officials announced that radiation had been slight and had dissipated quickly.

There were also official assurances that elaborate safety measures ensured that no nuclear explosion could be caused in such accidents, and prevented serious radiation dangers.

The "nuclear explosion" scare arose from the wording of a message sent by an Air Force sergeant from the missile base when the incident occurred. No official announcement on the cause of the "Bomarc" fire has been given.
