  • Description

More than a thousand people are homeless in the town of El Arish as a result of the worst flooding in the Sinai for 50 years. A solid wall of water rushed down the normally dry Wadi sweeping away all in its path.

A massive rescue operation was launched by the Israelis using helicopters and trucks. So far nine bodies have been recovered .... but the death toll is expected to be higher.

It was just after three in the morning on Saturday (February 22) when the floods from torrential downpours in Sinai swept down the wadi and hit the Arab community set in the orange groves on the Mediterranean coast. Families ran terrified into the darkness, others woke to find water lapping around their living rooms.

By Monday much of the water gone leaving behind inches (centimetres) of mud. Houses were swept away trees uprooted and communications cut. The main road and a railway line built in 1916 by the Turks were destroyed.
