  • Description

UK Professor Peter Medawar, 45-year-old Professor of Zoology at University College, London, receives a Nobel Prize worth over 15,000 for Medicine, it was announced Oct 20 while he was at work in the College's Zoology Experimental Laboratory.

The official citation from Stockholm said the award was for the discovery of "acquired immunological tolerance" The award also went to Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet of Australia.

Said Professor Medawar:This is a very delightful surprise - almost a shock. Somehow one never thinks of oneself as likely to be so honoured," and went on to pay tribute to two other research workers in his laboratory who helped in his efforts to discover what causes human tissues to be rejected by their new host on which they are grafted.

His quest is to find a durable way permitting surgeons to graft skin, kidneys, liver perhaps even the heart, of one man to another.
