  • Description

BRITAIN'S POP IDOLS -- THE BEATLES -- ARRIVED IN TOKYO YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN THE QUIETEST WELCOME ON RECORD FOR THE MOP-HAIRED QUARTET.

THE BEATLES' THUNDER WAS STOLEN BY TYPHOON KIT, WHICH LASHED THE JAPANESE CAPITAL WITH TORRENTIAL RAINS AND CAUSED THE AIRLINER CARRYING GEORGE, PAUL, JOHN AND RINGO TO BE DELAYED AT ANCHORAGE, IN ALASKA, FOR ALMOST ELEVEN HOURS.

WHEN THEY EVENTUALLY ARRIVED AT TOKYO AIRPORT, ONLY A HANDFUL OF FANS -- MOSTLY GIRLS -- WERE THERE TO GREET THEM, PLUS A STRONG CONTINGENT OF PRESSMEN. CARLOADS OF FANS TRIED TO REACH THE AIRPORT, BUT WERE TURNED BACK BY POLICE. AND AT THEIR HOTEL IN TOKYO, ABOUT 250 POLICE WERE ON DUTY TO PREVENT HYSTERICAL FANS FROM GETTING OUT OF HAND.

DURING THE BEATLES' FIVE DAY STAY, SOME TWO-THOUSAND RIOT POLICE WILL BE ON DUTY, WITH SEVERAL THOUSAND MORE IN RESERVE. AFTER THEIR PERFORMANCES IN JAPAN, THE BEATLES WILL LEAVE FOR MANILA ON SUNDAY (JULY 3).
