  • Description

KEEPING A WATER-ROUTE OPEN BETWEEN SAIGON AND THE SEA IS THE DANGEROUS TASK OF A SMALL NUMBER OF AMERICAN MINE-SWEEPERS. UNDER ALMOST CONSTANT SNIPER FIRE FROM THE BANKS THEY PATROL A 45 -MILE STRETCH OF RIVER USED BY SHIPS COMING IN AND OUT OF SAIGON DOCKS.

THIS STRETCH OF RIVER IS THE ONLY NAVIGABLE CHANNEL TO THE DOCKS AND ALREADY, DESPITE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE MINE-SWEEPERS, TWO SHIPS HAVE BEEN SUNK BY VIET CONG MINES.

THERE ARE TEN BOATS IN THE MINE-SWEEPER FLEET. THEY WORK IN PAIRS SWEEPING DOWN THE RIVER DRAGGING A CHAIN BETWEEN THEM. TO GET THE WIDEST SWEEP WITH THE CHAIN AND TO AVOID MINES THEY STAY CLOSE TO THE BANKS, PUTTING THEMSELVES WITHIN EASY RANGE OF SNIPER FIRE. ALTHOUGH THE BORDERS OF THE RIVER WERE TREATED WITH CHEMICALS SOME TIME AGO TO STRIP THE TREES AND BUSHES OF LEAVES WHICH COULD HIDE VIET CONG SNIPERS, THE EFFECTS ARE WEARING OFF AND THE LEAVES ARE RETURNING.

THE MINE-SWEEPERS HAVE FIBRE-GLASS PLATING WHICH PROTECTS THEM FROM VERY SMALL WEAPONS, AND THEY HAVE MACHINE GUNS WITH WHICH TO RETALIATE BUT THEY ARE STILL VERY SLOW AND VULNERABLE.

THE CAPTAIN OF ONE OF THE BOATS TALKED ABOUT AN INCIDENT WHEN HE AND HIS CREW CAME UNDER FIRE.
