    A SOVIET TRADE MISSION HAS OPENED TALKS IN NEW DELHI, INDIA, WITH MEMBERS OF THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IN AN EFFORT TO INCREASE THE TWO-WAY VOLUME OF TRADE. ALREADY TRADE BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES HAS DOUBLED IN THE PAST YEAR.

    AT PRESENT, INDIA IS EXPORTING A LARGE VARIETY OF FINISHED AND SEMI-FINISHED GOODS - INCLUDING SHOES, ENGINEERING PRODUCTS, SPICES AND CLOTH - IN RETURN FOR MACHINES AND CAPITAL PRODUCTS WHICH INDIA REQUIRES TO DEVELOP INDUSTRY.

    TALKS OPENED FORMALLY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE BUILDING. THE RUSSIAN DELEGATION OF SIX MEN IS LED BY MR. V. B. SPANDARIAN, AND THE INDIAN DELEGATION BY MR. JOSHI.

    THE SOVIET UNION HAS OFFERED INDIA A MILLION TONS OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, CHIEFLY IN THE FORM OF BADLY NEEDED KEROSENE, IN RETURN FOR A RANGE OF INDIAN PRODUCTS, INCLUDING BANANAS, STEEL, LIGHT MACHINERY AND TEXTILES.

    IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE TWO DELEGATIONS WILL NEGOTIATE A NEW FIVE-YEAR TRADE AGREEMENT WHICH WILL BE SIGNED LATER IN THE SOVIET CAPITAL, MOSCOW.
