Background: England have retained the World Pairs Speedway title, with Peter Collins and Malcolm Simmons scoring a total of 28 points. In a thrilling meeting at Manchester's Bellevue Stadium on Saturday (2 July) Sweden finished second after beating West Germany in a run-off for second and third places. Seven countries qualified for the final: England, Sweden, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, Finland, and Australia.

SYNOPSIS: Ivan Mauger of New Zealand was the only rider to come in ahead of both Britons during the whole meeting. Mauger, number 13, and his team mate Larry Ross, number 14, met the British pair towards the end of the meeting. In speedway racing with only four riders on the track at a time, points are awarded for each placing in a heat, and the highest total wins. England was well ahead by this time, but in heat 17, Mauger streaked in ahead of Malcolm Simmons. Peter Collins was third, and Ross fourth.

Heat 20, and the meeting is almost over. the England pair, Collins number 5, and Simmons number 6 are competing against Jiri Stancl, number 9 and Jan Werner, number 10, of Czechoslovakia.

In the end, Simmons took first place, with his team mate, Collins, second.

Heat 21, Finland versus Australia, in the last race of the day. The two Finns, Ila Teromaa, number 11 and Kai Niemi, number 12, were competing against Phil Crump, number 7 and Billy Sanders, number 8. Each pair had to race in six heats, as seven countries had qualified for the final.

At the end, Collins and Simmons of England took first place, and Sweden beat West Germany into second place after a run off.
