  • Description

Algerian voters queued at polling stations inn Algiers and surrounding districts, May 28/29, to record their choice in the 3-day municipal elections. The first two days of polling, May 27/28, produced voting figures of between 50 and 85% in different constituencies, average level being around 60%.

In an attempt to keep the populace away from the council polls, the rebel National Liberation Front - F.L.N. - threatened to murder any who vote, and rebel forces on the Tunisian frontier shelled French positions and attacked frontier defences. The French Government strongly urged people to go to the polls, hoping to strengthen Moslems in public office who are not afraid of the F.L.N.

European extremists - hostile to French President de Gaulle's policy of self-determination - campaign for a boycott of the elections.
