    THE LATEST ADVANCEMENT IN TELE-COMMUNICATIONS IN THE PACIFIC REGION IS SCHEDULED TO BE OPENED WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. IT'S THE NEW SATELLITE GROUND STATION IN HONG KONG.

    THE NEW STATION, TO BE KNOWN AS HONG KONG EARTH STATION I, HAS BEEN BUILT BY CABLE AND WIRELESS LTD., AT A COST TO TWO AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS STERLING.

    IT'S LOCATED ON A ROCKY PENINSULA AT STANLEY ON THE NORTHERN TIP OF HONG KONG ISLAND. MAIN FEATURES ARE A 90FT (27.4 METRE) DIAMETER ANTENNAE DISH, AN EARTH STATION RECEIVING BUILDING AND A MICRO-WAVE TOWER.

    THE NEW EARTH STATION WILL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO CARRY INWARD AND OUTWARD RADIO AND TELEVISION SIGNALS FROM THE PACIFIC SATELLITE INTELSAT III AS WELL AS NORMAL COMMUNICATIONS TRAFFIC.

    IT IS BEING BUILT TO WITHSTAND TYPHOON WINDS OF UP TO 250 MILES AN HOUR (402 KMS) AND IS EXPECTED TO BECOME OPERATIONAL FOR NORMAL TRAFFIC WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AND FOR TELEVISION TRAFFIC IN SEPTEMBER.

    A SECOND STATION LINKING HONG KONG WITH EUROPE AND LONDON WILL BE BUILT TOWARDS THE END OF NEXT YEAR.
