  • Description

Premier-designate Aldo Moro, bowing to pressure from right-wing colleagues, is to seek stronger parliamentary guarantees for the minority Christian Democrat government he proposes forming to end Italy's month-long political crisis.

Informed sources said Christian Democrat leaders, at a meeting on Friday night (6 February), asked Signor Moro to try to enlist the support of their former allies in Parliament, the Republican Party.

This followed a strong warning by former Christian Democrat Party Secretary Amintore Fanfani that the Catholic Party ran serious dangers if Signor Moro was allowed to form a government without a strong parliamentary base.

Earlier, the Christian Democrats had been reported on the point of giving Signor Moro the go ahead to form a government.

The Party's including the Premier-designate and Party Secretary Benigno Zaccagnini, favours the immediate formation a government on the grounds that the country cannot afford further delays.

But Signor Fanfani, a leading right-winger, argues that a weak government will be worse than useless.

Informed sources said the meeting asked Mr. Moro to try to enlist the support of their former allies in parliament, the Republican Party.
