  • Description

Lectures are expected to resume within the next few days in Nigeria's six universities, shut down in the wake of a strike by the Nigerian Association of University Teachers last week.

On Saturday (21 April) teachers at Lagos, Ife and Ahmadu Bello Universities voted to join their colleagues at Ibadan, Nsukka and Benin who, the previous day, decided to end their week-long strike over demands for increased wages and better fringe benefits.

A spokesmen for Lagos University teachers said they had decided to return to work in the interest of the Institution and the desire to ensure that higher education in the country was not disrupted.

Lagos University is one of the two Federal-run institutions whose teachers were ordered by the Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon, in a broadcast last week to return to work by Wednesday (25 April) or lose their jobs.

The timing of the strike had embarrassed the Federal Government which had planned to absorb about 5,000 graduating students this year into the compulsory National Youth Service.
