  • Description

RESCUE TEAMS HAVE SO FAR RECOVERED 110 BODIES FROM THE MINE IN EASTERN INDIA, RIPPED APART BY A HUGE EXPLOSION ON FRIDAY. REPORTS SAY 375 MINERS ARE FEARED DEAD.

THE DISASTER OCCURRED AT THE BHORI COLLIERY, NEAR DHANBAD, IN BIHAR STATE. IT WAS JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT WHEN A NEW SHIFT WAS COMING ON DUTY.

THE UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION SCATTERED WRECKAGE OVER AN AREA OF TWO-AND-A-HALF SQUARE MILES (4 SQ KMS). ALL WORKERS ON THE SPOT, INCLUDING THOSE ON THE SURFACE, WERE KILLED, ACCORDING TO A UNION LEADER. ONE REPORT SAID THAT A WORKMAN SLEEPING A MILE (1600 METRES) AWAY WAS KILLED BY A STONE HURLED FROM THE MINE SHAFT.

ANXIOUS RELATIVES CROWDED THE PITHEAD AS THE BODIES WERE BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE AND TAKEN AWAY.

(IT WAS INDIA'S WORST-EVER MINE DISASTER. THE WORLD'S WORST RECORDED ONE WAS IN APRIL, 1942, WHEN 1,549 MEN WERE KILLED IN THE HONKEIKO COLLIERY, MANCHURIA).
