Visnews filmed - 10 June - at Tokyo, the beginning of the 1959 "Peace March" to Hiroshima to protest against the use of nuclear weapons.

Ten thousand Japanese and a handful of foreigners, who will march on the first 10 mile lap from Tokyo to Kawanaki, gathered in Hibiya Park for a giant rally and to bid "Good Luck" to the five men who will walk all the way from Tokyo to Hiroshima itself.

Songs were sung and Peace flags waved as the march got under way, and mobile loud speaker vans appealed to all the spectators to join the marchers, even for a short way.

Another column of marchers left Niigata 11 June, heading for Hiroshima. There they will join the Tokyo contingent and a third group from Kokura in Kuyashu who leave on 22 July.

All three columns will converge to meet at Hiroshima August 4 in time to attend the three day Fifth World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen bombs, and to be present at the fourteenth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, the world's first atom-bombed city.

It is anticipated that over 10 million people in all will participate in the marches, which will be conducted in stages with relays of walkers talking over at each point.
