  • Description

A this group of injured Pakistani soldiers were repatriated to Rawalpindi from Delhi on Monday (8 May). The 37 soldiers were flown to Pakistan aboard a Swiss charter flight organised by the International Red Cross.

In addition to the soldiers, two women civilians and two children -- who'd been stranded in India when last December's war between India and Pakistan broke out -- were also repatriated on the BALAIR flight.

The ex-prisoners of war were seen off at the airport by Indian Army officers and officials of the Indian and International Red Cross organisations.

As the soldiers, many of them stretcher cases, boarded the aircraft, they were given small packets of chocolates and dried fruits. Ninety-nine Pakistani prisoners of war have been repatriated since the end of the war.

While these troops were being repatriated, the border between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir area was still tense after reports by the Indians that there had been weekend fighting there. According to the Indians, Pakistani troops made two attacks on Saturday (6 May) in the mountainous Kaiyan area of central Kashmir. Although the shooting was reported to have continued through to Sunday (7 May), there've been no reports of fighting since.
