  • Description

South African Prime Minister John Vorster gave an international press conference on Tuesday (March 30) -- the first since he became Premier five years ago.

The black-white issues in Africa were, predictably, the focus of his conference. Mr. Vorster announced that his Government would send out formal invitations to leaders of certain black states to visit South Africa for talks aimed at easing racial tension on the continent. The first arrival, he said, would be the President of Malawi, Dr. Hastings Banda, who would be coming to South Africa on a state visit later this year.

Other topics included plans to develop the national Bantu homelands within South Africa; the presence of South African police in Rhodesia, the role of the Church in the country; South Africa's position in international sport; and, of course, the controversial "arms for South Africa" issue. It is this last subject "VISNEWS" have chosen for this film, showing Mr. Vorster speaking at the conference.
