    TWELVE AFRICAN NATIONS, REPRESENTING A DIVERSITY OF CULTURES FROM ALGERIA IN THE NORTH TO TANZANIA IN THE EAST. HAVE PAVILIONS AT EXPO '70. ASIA'S FIRST WORLD EXPOSITION OPENS SATURDAY 14TH.

    THE ORGANISERS AT EXPO '70 WERE KEEN TO ATTRACT AS MANY AFRICAN NATIONS AS POSSIBLE IN VIEW OF JAPAN'S STRONG INTEREST IN THAT CONTINENT. IT IS TO AFRICA THAT JAPAN LOOKS FOR MANY OF THE RAW MATERIALS NEEDED TO KEEP HER PROSPERING INDUSTRIES IN OPERATION.

    DESPITE THE LONG DISTANCE INVOLVED JAPANESE BUSINESSMEN HAVE BEEN AT WORK IN THE NORTH, EAST AND WEST AFRICA, PROSPECTING BARGAINING AND BUYING. WHEN EARLY PLANNING FOR THE SIX-MONTH EXPOSITION BEGAN TWO YEARS AGO A GOODWILL EXPO AMBASSADOR TOURED AFRICA. THE RESULT IS A TWELVE-NATION REPRESENTATION OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    THE COUNTRIES INCLUDE, GABON, UGANDA, MADAGASCAR, GHANA AND ZAMBIA, WHOSE PAVILIONS ARE SEEN HERE. ALL ARE STRIKING IN LAYOUT AND NOT ONLY SHOW FACETS OF DAILY LIFE AND CULTURE IN THOSE COUNTRIES BUT ALSO FEATURE INDUSTRIAL AND PROMOTIONAL DISPLAYS.
