Prince and Princess Rainier of Monaco are awaiting the birth of their second child. The event is expected within a few days.
So that the Princess may have her baby is perfect surroundings, Prince Rainier had a beautiful villa built six hundred feet up on a hill with a wonderful view out over the sea - on the plateau Fontbonne.
One of the dominating edifices of the Principality is the Cathedral, where the new-born babe will in due course be baptised.
Prince Rainier has recently been at loggerheads with his National Council. He sent a sharply worded letter reminding members that he is sovereign ruler and warning them that he will tolerate no attempt to curtail his powers.
The letter marked the second round of a crisis developing in the State since the elections brought in a National Council determined to have a greater say in running the affairs of Monaco, which has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since the Middle Ages.
A palace spokesman announced that Prince Rainier had written the letter to Dr. Joseph Simon, the local physician, who has been President of the National Council since the elections.
Bound up with all the controversy is the succession to the title. If the new baby is a boy then provision must be made in the constitution for appropriate financial allowances in the palace estimates. In his letter Prince Reinier declared he was "astonished at the excessive haste" with which the new National Council had demanded constitutional reform.
