  • Description

Bishop Muzorewa's African Nationalist Council delegation has arrived in Livingstone, Zambia, for Monday's (25 August) vital talks on the future of Rhodesia.

The meeting is aimed at stopping the sporadic fighting between black and white in white minority-ruled Rhodesia. But own stumbling block to negotiants will have to be overcome almost immediately if the talks are to succeed. Rhodesian Premier Mr. Ian Smith sees Monday's meeting simply as a signing ceremony of intent to negotiate and not fight.

The Nationalists on the other hand see the talks, which will take place in a railway carriage on the Zambian-Rhodesian border, as a chance for substantive talks - and some of their exiled leaders face detention if they return to Rhodesia. Both Mr. Smith and Bishop Muzorewa have however declared themselves determined that the meeting should succeed.

Observers believe the chances of success have been strengthened by the Announcement that South African Prime Minister John Vorster and Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda will also be attending.

It will be an historic first meeting between Dr. Kaunda - identified as the moderate voice of Black Africa - and Mr. Vorster representing the bastion of White rule.
