  • Description

PAUL TAKESHI FUJI, OF HONOLULU, WON THE WORLD JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT BOXING TITLE FROM SANDRO LOPOPOLO, OF ITALY, IN TWO MINUTES 33 SECONDS OF THE SECOND ROUND OF SUNDAY'S TITLE FIGHT. FUJI WON ON AN AUTOMATIC KNOCKOUT, UNDER JAPANESE RULES, WHEN LOPOPOLO WAS KNOCKOUT DOWN FOR THE THIRD TIME IN THE ROUND.

SOME 10,000 FANS AT THE KURAMAE KOKUGICAN HALL, SAW THE JAPANESE DESCENDED HAWAIIAN TAKE THE TITLE. AS THE DECISION WAS ANNOUNCED, THE CROWD WENT WILD; DESPITE HIS AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP, FUJI IS REGARDED BY THE JAPANESE AS A LOCAL BOY.

IN THE FIRST ROUND, BOTH BOXERS CAME OUT OF THEIR CORNERS CAUTIOUSLY, AND ALTHOUGH THE ROUND WAS ABOUT EVENLY BALANCED, IT WAS LOPOPOLO'S RING CRAFT AND FOOTWORK WHICH INSPIRED CONFIDENCE.

FUJI'S CHANCE TO TAKE THE WORLD CROWN CAME, HOWEVER, EARLY IN THE SECOND ROUND AS THE CAUTIOUS SPARRING TURNED INTO A DETERMINED SID TO SETTLE THE FIGHT EARLY.

SWINGING LEFTS AND RIGHTS, FUJI HUSTLED HIS OPPONENT AGAINST THE ROPES, AND FLOORED LOPOPOLO WITH A TERRIFIC RIGHT CROSS TO THE JAW, FOR THE MANDATORY COUNT OF EIGHT. LOPOPOLO GOT UP UNSTEADILY, AND IT WAS APPARENT THE END WAS NEAR.

FUJI POUNDED HOME A SERIES OF STINGING RIGHTS AND LEFTS TO THE CHAMPION'S FACE, AND SENT HIM TO THE CANVAS FOR A SECOND TIME. STILL BATTERING LOPOPOLO FUJI DROVE THE CHAMPION INTO A NEUTRAL CORNER AND POUNDED AWAY AT HIM AS HE CLUNG WEAKLY ON THE ROPES.

LOPOPOLO SAGGED AGAINST THE ROPES, STILL STANDING, BUT TECHNICALLY DOWN OUT SINCE ONLY THE CORD OF THE RINGSIDE BENEATH HIS ARM WAS KEEPING HIM FROM THE CANVAS.

AT TWO MINUTES 33 SECONDS OF THE ROUND, THE AMERICAN REFEREE JAY EDSON ENDED THE FIGHT, AS A HANDLER RUSHED FROM LOPOPOLO'S CORNER, EXTENDING HIS ARM TO STAVE OFF THE PUNISHMENT WHICH THE ITALIAN HAD TAKEN.

AS THE DECISION WAS ANNOUNCED FUJI JUMPED IN JUBILATION, SHOUTING 'BANZAI'.

IT WAS THE 26TH WIN OF THE HAWAIIAN'S CAREER, AND HIS 21ST KNOCKOUT. WITHIN THE NEXT 60 DAYS HE IS TO MEET THE FIRST CONTENDER FOR HIS TITLE, WEST GERMANY'S WILLIE QUARTUOR, AND LOPOPOLO HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL CHALLENGE THE WINNER OF THE BOUT.
