    PRESIDENT MILTON OBOTE, OF UGANDA, YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) OPENED A GBP2 MILLION HOTEL IN KAMPALA THAT IS EXPECTED TO PLAY A BIG PART IN INCREASING THE COUNTRY'S TOURIST INDUSTRY. THE CEREMONY WAS PART OF THE PROGRAMME MARKING THE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF UGANDA'S INDEPENDENCE, WHICH FALLS TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

    A LARGE AUDIENCE OF GUESTS SAW THE PRESIDENT CUT A TAPE TO INAUGURATE THE HOTEL, WHICH HAS BEEN BUILT AND EQUIPPED FOR THE UGANDA GOVERNMENT BY THE BRITISH CONSTRUCTION FIRM OF CEMENTATION LTD.

    IN HIS OPENING SPEECH, PRESIDENT OBOTE SAID THE DECISION TO BUILD THE HOTEL WAS TAKEN IN 1963, AND SHOWED FORESIGHT AND CONFIDENCE IN THE COUNTRY'S DEVELOPMENT.

    THE HOTEL HAD STIMULATED IMPROVEMENTS IN OTHER HOTELS IN UGANDA, WITH THE RESULT THAT A BETTER RANGE OF ACCOMMODATION WAS NOW AVAILABLE TO TOURISTS AND OTHER VISITORS.

    THE 16-STOREY HOTEL IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST MODERN IN EAST AFRICA. EACH OF ITS ROOMS HAS A PRIVATE BALCONY, WITH VIEWS OF NEARBY LAKE VICTORIA.
