  • Description

The first Third World Economists Congress opened in Algiers on Monday (2 February). 200 delegates from 60 countries are attending the conference which is organised by the Algerian Centre for Applied Economic Research.

Algeria's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, M. Mohammed Ben Yahia, performed the opening ceremony. He stressed the need for the total involvement of Third World nations in the struggle for a more just and humane world.

The aim of the conference is to work out a coordinated Third World policy on relations with developed countries, and also to apply this in the fields of raw material development and the furthering of a new economic and financial international order.

It is also hoped that a meeting of the intellectual elite of the Third World will take place. This discussion will be in the form of an exchange of ideas and techniques, working towards the goal of Third World economic independence.

The Congress last for one week -- until 7 February.
