  • Description

The first Nike-Hercules Missile unit of the United States Army to be based in the Far East, gave a Press conference on Oct. 21 near the Formosan capital of Taipei.

The unit landed in Nationalist China on Oct. 8 from the USS Brickenridge. There are 703 officers and men and thirty-four of the four-top, ground-to-air missiles in this unit.

The unit's commander, Lt. Col Bernard I. Greenberg is reported to stated that there is a high possibility of the Nike-Hercules being handed over to Formosan forces. Of his mission, he said that he was there to defend the air space of Formosa in case of enemy attack.

Of the missile he said that it is guided by three radar units, was capable of out-manoeuvring any plane in existence or even on the drawing board, and was deadly accurate. He emphasized his last point by saying," Give us an enemy plane and we'll get it".

The Nike-Hercules, with speeds in excess of 1,500 mph and a range of 75 miles, is the first operational rocket to be armed with either a nuclear or conventional warhead. Lt. Col. Greenberg refused to disclose whether any nuclear warhead had been brought to Formosa.

These are not the first guided missiles to be shipped to Nationalist China. Formosan fighter planes have already claimed several Communist victims with the Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.
