  • Description

People's Park - in the heart of Shanghai surrounded by multi-storied buildings.

Before liberation, this was a race course owned by imperialists, a gamblers' den and an adventurers' paradise.

After the victory of the Resistance War Against Japan, U.S. imperialism barged into China, turning the race-course into its barracks.

The liberation of China ended the Shanghai' Race Course's history of disgrace and humiliation. It became a People's park brimming with the smiles of youth and spring.

The bar-room near the former race course is made into a sports palace.

It was here that famed Chinese table tennis players such as Hsu Ying-sheng and Cheng Ming-chih had their early training.

The municipal library occupies the once awesome apartments annexed to the former race course. It has a collection of some 50 thousand books and receives over 8,000 readers a day.

In the park itself, the foilage provides pleasant shades. People's Park in Shanghai is now a place for rest and recreation for the city's labouring people.
