  • Description

Among 9,000 guests at a Buckingham Palace, London, garden party, July 21, 100 wartime Resistance men and women who had helped British servicemen escape from the Continent. Many of them were introduced to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Brought over by the Royal Air Force Escaping Society on a four-day holiday, they proved the "guests of honour" at the season's last Royal garden party. One of those who attracted Royal attention was 50-year-old Cesar Marty from the Pyrennees mountains, wearing a black beret and tweed shit. He told the Queen - who asked about his wartime exploits, guiding British escapees into Spain - "Your french accent is very good."
