    United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim was in Cyprus this week for the ceremonial opening of new communal talks to solve the conflict between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island.

    On Wednesday (7 June) Dr. Waldheim lunched with the Cyprus Vice-President and Turkish Cypriot leader, Dr. Fazil Kutchuk, who will be among those to present the minority case in the eight-year-old dispute.

    Dr. Waldheim's route passed by a series of new buildings housing departments of the Turkish Cypriot administration, which controls most of the minority Turkish community independently of Archbishop Makarios' central government.

    The United Nations is striving to bring about reconciliation of the two communities in a sovereign, independent and unitary state.

    The Waldheim visit a week before the U.N. Security Council discusses the renewal of the mandate to keep the 3,000-man peace force on the island.

    SYNOPSIS: United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim visited Nicosia on Wednesday as part of a visit to Cyprus to attend the ceremonial opening of new talks between the Greek and Turkish communities.

    Dr. Waldheim got an enthusiastic welcome when he drove into the barricaded Turkish Cypriot quarter of Nicosia....The United Nations is striving to bring about a reconciliation of the two communities in a single, independent state.

    Dr. Waldheim had come to lunch with Cyprus Vice-President and Turkish Cypriot leader, Dr. Fazil Kutchuk, who will be among those at the upcoming meeting to present the minority case in the eight-year-old dispute.

    In addition to Dr. Kutchuk, Dr. Waldheim met with President Makarios. His visit comes joust one week before the U.N. Security Council discusses the renewal of the mandate to keep the 3,000-man U.N. peace force on the island.
