    At Saigon's Tan Son Nhut airport on Wednesday (20 December), American and South Vietnamese officials turned out to farewell General Alexander Haig, the American envoy working with Dr. Henry Kissinger in talks with the North Vietnamese aimed at bringing an end to the Indochina war.

    The United States Ambassador to South Vietnam, Mr. Elsworth Bunker, conferred at length with General Haig before the envoy's departure.

    Diplomats have revealed that General Haig had told both the South Vietnamese President, Nguyen Van Thieu, and Khmer leader Lon Nol that Washington will approach both Peking and Moscow within a few days in a bid to establish peace in Laos and the Khmer Republic following the impasses at the Paris peace talks.

    General Haig's aircraft was t fly to Bangkok before going onto Washington.
