Background: Argentina beat Poland 2-1 in a friendly soccer international in Buenos Aires on Sunday (12 October). The match was the second in a series of three against East European sides which the World Champions have undertaken in preparation for the Gold Cup championship in Montevideo at the end of the year.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina took the lead in the eleventh minute. Santamaria running onto a through ball, was brought down inside the Polish penalty area and skipper Daniel Passarella scored.

Throughout the match Poland's experimental side played with great spirit, breaking quickly and decisively. Their only failing was in front of goal. Many chances went begging because of weak shooting or indecision. But they refused to be overrun when Argentina started to take control with single-minded and confident attacking play.

Early in the second half Poland equalised. Wlodimierz Smolarek was brought down on the way to goal and Wlozimierz Ciolek made no mistake with the penalty.

Man of the match was Argentina's Diego Maradona. He made up for his poor showing against Bulgaria the previous week with a breathtaking display of skill. The 19-year-old player devastated the Polish defence with penetrating, pin-point passes to his forwards. It was his goal, Maradona's eighth for Argentina, which clinched the match.

Maradona bent a free-kick from just outside the Polish penalty area round the defensive wall and into the net.
