  • Description

THIRTY SIX PEOPLE HAVE DIED SO FAR IN A CHOLERA EPIDEMIC WHICH IS SWEEPING THE WEST COAST OF SOUTH KOREA.

THE SOUTH KOREAN HEALTH MINISTER, DR. HI-SUP CHUNG HAS DECLARED FOUR WESTERN COASTAL COUNTIES AS QUARANTINE AREAS. ROADS HAVE BEEN SEALED AND TRAFFIC MOVEMENT IN THE STRICKEN AREAS IS BEING SEVERELY REGULATED.

AUTHORITIES ARE HAMPERED BY A LACK OF DRUGS IN DEALING WITH THE EPIDEMIC WHICH WAS FIRST REPORTED ON AUGUST 27. KUNSAN CITY IS ONE OF THE WORST-HIT AREAS.

IN ADDITION TO THE DEAD, THERE ARE 480 SICK PEOPLE WHO ARE SUSPECTED OF HAVING THE DISEASE.

ONE SIDE EFFECT WHICH THE EPIDEMIC HAS HAD IS TO REDUCE EXPORTS TO JAPAN. THE JAPANESE ARE RELUCTANT TO IMPORT THE FISH WHICH IS THE LIVELIHOOD OF MANY OF THE PEOPLE IN THE EPIDEMIC AREA -- SO THE TRADE HAS VIRTUALLY DISAPPEARED.
