  • Description

The passengers and crew of the Pan American Boeing 747 Jumbo jet hijacked to Cairo yesterday, and later blown up, arrived at Rome's Fiumicino Airport on Monday (September 7) on their way to New York.

The aircraft was hijacked by Palestinian commandos after it had taken off from Amsterdam on Sunday (September 6) bound for New York. The commandos made the aircraft fly to Cairo after a brief refuelling stop in Beirut and planted nine time-bombs in the aircraft shortly before landing.

The 174 passengers and 23 crew were ordered to leave the aircraft immediately it landed. Minutes after they had scrambled down the emergency escape chutes the jet blew up. Some of the passengers were injured, two with broken legs, escaping from the aircraft.

The three hijackers were arrested by Egyptian authorities. The crew and 152 of the passengers left Cairo on a relief Pan-American aircraft and arrived in Rome on Monday. Their original aircraft, a nine million pound sterling (21.6 million dollars) Jumbo jet, lay in ashes at the end of a runway at Cairo airport.

The hijacking was one of four on Sunday (September 6) - all organised by the popular Front for the liberation of Palestine. One hijack failed but two other aircraft are being held with their passengers at a desert airstrip in Jordan. The Front is demanding the release of all Arab guerrillas being held in Britain, West Germany and Switzerland; as well as the release of a certain number of commandos of the 3,000 being held in Israel
