  • Description

Amid jeers of docksiders, the Italian liner "Roma" sailed - July 13 from Sydney, Australia with 500 passengers, on her return voyage to Europe after a rough reception in Australian ports.

To avoid further trouble in Australia the ship will not stop at Brisbane, but make Singapore her first port of call.

As the Australian unions, in support of the Italian seamen, have declared the liner "Roma" to be "black", passengers had to carry their own luggage on board under strong police escort.

Demonstrations against the crew, which has refused to join the world-wide Italian seamen's strike flared up when demonstrators broke the police cordon as the ship prepared to leave, and fights broke out on the quayside between Australian trade union men and police during which several people were knocked to the ground including our cameraman.

When loading of stores was completed, the ship slipped her bowline unaided, and, without the assistance of tugs slowly manoeuvred away from the quayside and headed for the open sea.
