  • Description

Britain's Tony Brise won the International John Player Formula Three motor racing championship by winning the final event in the series at Brands Hatch on Saturday (20 October).

Brise, driving a March/Ford totalled 123 points, two more than Australian driver Alan Jones, who started the race with a comfortable lead in the points standings, but could finish only sixth in the final event.

Brise led from the first lap and his victory was never in doubt.

But there was a fierce battle for second place between Russell Wood of Britain and Masami Kuwashima of Japan -- Wood won the fight when Kuwashima spun on the seventeenth lap of the 30 lap race.

Alan Jones, who needed to finish only fourth to clinch the title, was in that position until midway through the race when a mishap on the damp track cost him two places -- and the Formula Three title.
