  • Description

A TEN-FEET WIDE BREACH WAS TORN IN THE WALL DIVIDING EAST AND WEST SECTORS OF BERLIN, APRIL 9, WHEN TWO YOUNG EAST BERLIN WORKERS RAMMED IT WITH A FIVE-TON LORRY LADEN WITH CEMENT.

THE MEN DROVE THE LORRY AT FULL SPEED INTO THE WALL, AND JUMPED OUT WHEN IT STALLED IN THE RUBBLE. THEY DASHED THROUGH THE BREACH INTO THE FRENCH SECTOR IN THE NORTH OF THE CITY, AND RACED TO SAFETY.

EAST BERLIN POLICE WHO WITNESSED THE ESCAPE, FIRED THREE SHOTS, BUT DID NOT HIT THE REFUGEES. LIGHT ARMOURED CARS ARRIVED ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE WALL AND PEOPLE'S POLICE, UNDER HEAVY PROTECTION, REPAIRED THE WALL. THEY WERE ORDERED BACK BY WEST BERLIN POLICE WHEN THEY WERE ABOUT TO CROSS OVER TO RETRIEVE THE SCATTERED CONCRETE BLOCKS ON THE WESTERN SIDE.

WEST BERLIN POLICE AND FRENCH OBSERVERS KEPT A CLOSE WATCH AS THE REPAIRS WERE CARRIED OUT.
