  • Description

Archbishop Antonios Khreish was formally enthroned as Christian Maronite Patriarchal seat of Bkerki, near Beirut, on sunday (9 February)
The Maronite sect is the largest Christian community in Lebanon, and the enthronement was attended by President Suleiman Franjieh and leading Lebanese officials.

Archbishop Khreish was elected by the college of Maronite Bishops last week to succeed Cardinal Paul Meoushi, who dies on II January after several months of illness.

The 68-year-old new Patriarch was born at Ein Ibel in southern Lebanon. He was ordained in 1930,, and became bishop of Tartous, on the Syrian coast, in 1950. He served as Patriarchal Vicar under Cardinal Meoushi, and his predecessor, Patriarch Arida. In 1974, he was appointed Patriarchal Vicar-General.

There are almost 400,000 Maronites in Lebanon and Syria, with smaller communities in other lands around the eastern Mediterranean. Following the Syro-Antiochene rite and with West Syriac as the liturgical tongue,, the Maronite sect remains subject to the Vatican. The Patriarch acts as the immediate spiritual head of the sect both in Lebanon and for the numerous dispersed congregations throughout the world.
