In Rio de Janeiro, the English touring soccer team managed to fight Brazil to a goal-less draw on Wednesday (8 June) in the first match of a three-game South American tour.

SYNOPSIS: England were on the attack in the first half and should have scored numerous times. Both teams are former World Champions, but far from the form that took them to the top.

Only five minutes into the game at the Maracana stadium -- a cross from England's Keegan to Greenhof, headed to Pearson who shot it straight at the Brazilian goalie Leao. Brazil moved into an attack and were fouled.

Paulo Cezar of Brazil took the free kick and English goalkeeper Ray Clemence made one of several brilliant saves. England were reported to have dominated the first half possibly because the Brazilians were expecting less of a side.

After half time, the tide went the other way with England forced into desperate rearguard action. Brazil's Gil -- number seven -- led many of the Brazilian charges.

At one stage, Gil had the ball in the net only to be ruled off-side. With Cesar, Cereza, and Roberto joining him, England were hard put to stave off defeat. The Brazilian attack was remorseless right up until the end of the game.
