  • Description

The Zaire World Cup football team, "the Leopards", arrived in Frankfurt on Friday (31 May) for an intensive to weeks training schedule before meeting Scotland at Dortmund in mid-June.

Their arrival in Frankfurt, amid tight security to prevent the possibility of guerrilla attacks during the signing of the Syrian-Israeli disengagement agreement, followed ten days of preliminary training in Italy and Switzerland.

The Zaire team is a rank outsider for the World Cup and its Manager, Blagoja Vidinic, a former Yugoslavian goal-keeper, has few illusions about their task. He told reporters his team would do its best but they knew their limitations.

Zaire qualified for the sole African place in the World Cup finals after winning eight out of their ten matches against African teams.

However, since their arrival in Europe, they have been defeated by Italian and Swiss club teams.

SYNOPSIS: The Zaire World Cup football team, "the Leopards", arrived in Frankfurt of Friday facing an almost impossible task -- to try to get into the last rounds of the World Cup finals later this month.

Although the Leopards easily won the African section of the World Cup preliminaries they have already been defeated twice by Italian and Swiss club teams in the last ten days. Their coach, former Yugoslav goalkeeper, Blagoje Vidinic, acknowledges the team's limitations but said they would do their best. African football was improving rapidly, he said, and would rival Europe within ten years. Their first opponents will be Scotland at Dortmund in two weeks time. It they win they will then face the powerful Yugoslavians followed by the defending champions, Brazil. The Africans, used to hard fields and tropical heat, will be at a disadvantage in the cooler temperatures and possible wet fields.
