  • Description

In the first day's play of N.S.W. v. West Indies match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, New South Wales wrecked the top half of the West Indies batting list in a blistery speed attack. Alan Davidson and Gordon Rorke caused and amazing collapse, taking five wickets for only 16 runs. At that stage Davidson had the figures of three for eleven and Rorke two for four. The first five wickets fell in 30 minutes.

Davidson opened the attack to Cammie Smith who was partnered by Joe Solomon. The first ball for Davidson flew outside the off stump. Smith played the second and the third dipped in to match Smith from the front, and he was given out 1.b.w. by umpire Ted Nykas for a duck.

Rohan Kanhai fresh from his 252 in Melbourne last week, came in with the total one for none, and was nearly bowled first ball.

Kanhai immediately went for runs and square drove the next ball on the half valley for two. He then hit another splendid square cut behind point for three off the following delivery.

Rorke began his over with an astrocious wide which was fielded by fourth slip. The next ball was straight and rose sharply to hit Solomon on the fingers as he played in down in front of him. These was a holdup while Solomon kept shaking his injured hand.

Kanhai off drove Davidson's first ball in his second over for two. Davidson's fourth delivery lifted sharply from the pitch to get a snick and Kanhai was caught behind by Ford for seven to give Davidson two for eight.

West Indies were not three for nine in nineteen deliveries.

Peter Lashley joined Sobers for the next batting partnership. Rorke troubled Lashley - the ball flying all around the wicket until the seventh delivery which took the balls to give Rorke the figures two for none.

West Indies were now four for ten.

Worrel played the last ball of Rorke's over down fine leg for four.

Davidson secured Sober's wicket in his third over - five of the West Indies top batsman having fallen for sixteen runs.
