  • Description

At least 76 people were injured when an express train running between Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris, jumped the rails near Mons, Belgium, on Thursday (12 June), and plunged down a 15-foot (five metre) embankment.

A railway spokesman said that two of the injured were in a critical condition in hospital with spinal injuries. The other 74 were only slightly injured.

The accident occurred just outside the suburban station of Glhin, three miles (five kilometres) north of Mons. A communique from the Ministry of the Interior said that the first carriages toppled on to their sides, sending five other carriages down the embankment. The cause of the accident was not known.

It was the third major accident in southern Belgium in the past ten months. Three people were killed and 12 injured when two trains crashed near Nivelles last February. And in August last year, 17 people were killed when a train jumped the rails and ploughed into the side of a bridge at Luttre, just north of Mons.
