  • Description

THOUSANDS OF CHEERING AFRICANS AND ASIANS LINED THE STREETS OF NAIROBI, KENYA, SEPT. 10, WHEN, ACCOMPANIED BY PRIME MINISTER NYERERE OF TANGANYIKA, MR. JOMO KENYATTA DROVE INTO THE CITY IN AN OPEN CAR TO MAKE HIS FIRST OFFICIAL POLITICAL APPEARANCE THERE SINCE HIS RELEASE IN AUGUST FROM A RESTRICTED MOVEMENT ORDER.

DRIVING TRIUMPHANTLY BUT SLOWLY THROUGH THE CROWD, MR. KENYATTA AND MR. NYERERE WERE MOBBED AND GARLANDED IN ONE LARGE SHOPPING CENTRE WHICH INDIAN TRADERS HAD FESTOONED WITH BUNTING AND A "WELCOME HOME KENYATTA" ARCH OF RED, WHITE AND BLUE.

BETWEEN FIFTY AND SIXTY-THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE FOOTBALL STADIUM THAT SAME AFTERNOON TO HEAR MR. KENYATTA, MR. NYERERE, AND OTHER AFRICAN LEADERS WARN OF THE NEED FOR UNITY "FOR WITHOUT IT WE SHALL BE CRUSHED LIKE SHEEP". A GRIM NOTE IN THE OTHERWISE CHEERFUL ATMOSPHERE OF THE RALLY WAS SOUNDED BY PAUL NGEI, A FORMER KENYA AFRICA UNION COLLEAGUE OF KENYATTA. NGEI, WHO WAS SENTENCED WITH HIM AT KAPENGURIA, WORE A BLACK FORAGE CAP WITH THE DATES 1952-1961 SUPERIMPOSED IN WHITE. HE TOLD THE CROWD THAT LAND WHICH HAD BEEN TAKEN FROM THE AFRICANS MUST BE TAKEN BACK, AND SAID HE WOULD NEVER AGREE THAT EUROPEANS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN IN POSSESSION.
