  • Description

MORE THAN 500 FIREMEN FROM 20 BRIGADES BATTLED IN PARIS TODAY (MONDAY) TO CONTAIN A HUGE FIRE IN A PETROL-CHEMICAL FACTORY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY. FLAMES SHOT 1,000 FEET (300 METRES) INTO THE AIR AS MANY OF THE 72 STORAGE TANKS AT THE SUBURBAN ST. DENIS PLANT EXPLODED. A NIGHT WATCHMAN EMPLOYED BY THE COMPANY HAS SINCE BEEN ARRESTED FOR STARTING THE FIRE.

FIREMEN COULD NOT GET WITHIN 100 YARDS (METRES) OF THE BLAZE BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE HEAT.

FOUR HUNDRED PEOPLE LIVING IN RIVERSIDE HOMES, AND PORTUGUESE AND SPANIARDS LIVING IN AN ADJOINING SHANTYTOWN, WERE EVACUATED SHORTLY AFTER THE FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING.

POLICE SAID THE NIGHT WATCH MAN ALLEGED TO HAVE STARTED THE FIRE DID SO BECAUSE HE WANTED TO "GET EVEN WITH SOCIETY".

EYE-WITNESSES TO THE FIRE SAID PEOPLE LIVING NEARBY WERE AWAKENED BY THE NOISE OF EXPLODING TANKS, AND RUSHED INTO THE STREET IN NIGHT CLOTHES, CARRYING CHILDREN AND BELONGINGS.

FIRST AID TEAMS WERE RUSHED TO THE SPOT, BUT THERE WERE NO IMMEDIATE REPORTS OF CASUALTIES.
