    OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH INTERNATIONAL NEWSFILM AGENCY, DIED IN LONDON TODAY (FRIDAY). MR. COLE, AGED 50, WAS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINGUISHED FIGURES IN THE WORLD OF JOURNALISM.

    MR. COLE STARTED HIS CAREER ON SCOTTISH NEWSPAPERS, AND CAME TO LONDON 27 YEARS AGO AS A REPORTER ON THE BRITISH PRESS ASSOCIATION NEWS AGENCY. IN 1942, HE WAS INVITED TO JOIN REUTERS - THEN IN THE PROCESS OF REORGANISATION - AS NEWS MANAGER.

    AT REUTERS HE WAS ONE OF THE MAIN FIGURES IN GUIDING AND DEVELOPING THE EXPANSION OF THE NEWS AGENCY IN THE POST WAR YEARS. HE BECAME EDITOR THREE YEARS AFTER JOINING THE AGENCY; IN 1958 HE BECAME DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER AND IN 1959 HE WAS APPOINTED GENERAL MANAGER.

    TWO YEARS AGO HE TOOK ON A FRESH RANGE OF DUTIES AS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH INTERNATIONAL NEWSFILM AGENCY (BCINA) OF WHICH REUTERS IS A MEMBER.

    WITH A POSSIBILITY UNPARALLELED RECORD OF TRAVEL ON REUTERS' BUSINESS, HE ESTABLISHED CLOSE CONTACTS WITH LEADERS OF THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.

    HE MET AND TALKED WITH MOST OF THE WORLD'S POLITICAL LEADERS - AMONG THEM PRESIDENT KENNEDY, PRESIDENT EISENHOWER, MR NIKITA KHRUSHCHEV, HEADS OF EUROPEAN STATES AND PRACTICALLY ALL COMMONWEALTH HEADS.

    IN OCTOBER 1961, HE VISITED PEKING, CAPITAL OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE' REPUBLIC, WHERE HE WAS ENTERTAINED AT A RECEPTION BY MARSHAL CHEN YI, THE CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER. DURING HIS VISIT, HE HAD AN EXCLUSIVE THREE-HOUR INTERVIEW WITH MARSHAL CHEN YI, DISCUSSING A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS.

    MR. COLE WAS THE HOLDER OF HONOURS BESTOWED BY FOUR COUNTRIES.

    IN 1947 HE WAS AWARDED THE KING HAAKON VII LIBERTY CROSS (NORWAY). IN 1961 HE WAS MADE A COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF PHOENIX IN GREECE. ALSO THAT YEAR THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT INVESTED HIM AS A COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF ORANGE NASSAU. AND IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR KING BAUDOUIN OF THE BELGIANS HONOURED HIM WITH THE RANK AND INSIGNIA OF COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF THE CROWN (AN AWARD RARELY BESTOWED ON NATIONALS OF OTHER COUNTRIES).
