  • Description

MONSIGNOR ALOIS MULINDWA HAS BEEN CONSECRATED THE SECOND AFRICAN ARCHBISHOP IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY IN THE CONGO. HE WAS ENTHRONED AS ARCHBISHOP OF BUKAVU AT AN OPEN-AIR CEREMONY OUTSIDE THE CATHEDRAL IN THE TOWN, CAPITAL OF KIVU PROVINCE.

THE NEW AFRICAN ARCHBISHOP REPLACED A EUROPEAN CHURCH LEADER WHO HAS RETIRED. AFTER HE WAS CONSECRATED, ARCHBISHOP MULINDWA ASKED FOR THE HELP OF ALL CHRISTIANS IN CARRYING OUT WHAT HE CALLED HIS HEAVY DUTIES IN KIVU. THE PROVINCIAL PRIME MINISTER WAS AT THE CEREMONY, TO HEAR THE SOLEMN RITES OF INSTALLATION SAID SWAHILI.

BUKAVU WAS THE BITE OF ONE OF THE EARLY SUCCESSES OF THE CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT'S WAR AGAINST REBELS. IN AUGUST 1964 THE TOWN CENTRE WAS DEVASTATED IN FIGHTING THAT DROVE THE REBELS OUT, AND RESULTED IN MANY MISSIONARIES BEING EVACUATED.
