Mrs. Sirima Bandaranaike - widow of Ceylon's assassinated former Premier, and now Ceylon's first woman Premier, - July 25 received enthusiastic ovations from large crowds when, with members of her Cabinet she visited the Sacred City of Anuradhapura.
Buddhists, Catholics, Anglicans, Hindus and Muslims held special receptions to greet her. At the Sacred City she addressed the large crowd, speaking from the famous Lion Pillar, and pledged to build a united nation. She had visited Anuradhapura before beginning her election campaign, and during her return visit, she made offerings at the Sacred Bo Tree, as she had done on the earlier occasion.
Afterwards, she visited Kandy, Ceylon's hill capital, where there was another big reception for her, here, she visited the Temple where what is believed to be a tooth of the Buddha is enshrined. Late last March, her predecessor in office, Mr. Dudley Senanayake, also visited the Temple soon after taking office.
