Mr. Olafur Thors, leader of Iceland's Independence Liberal-Conservative Party, and much favoured to become Prime?

  • Description

Mr. Olafur Thors, leader of Iceland's Independence Liberal-Conservative Party, and much favoured to become Prime Minister after final results of the current General Election are declared, was interviewed in Reykjavik, October 26.

Asked what would be the biggest problem faced by the next Government, Mr. Thors (SOF) said he thought it would be Iceland's inflation, which would remain a serious problem for many years.

Mr. Thors said he could see no possibility of reaching agreement with Britain on Iceland's 12-mile fishing limit, but that Iceland would comply with what is decided at the International Conference next spring, on the law of the sea - providing the other participating nations do so.

On the possibility of Iceland withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty organisation, Mr. Thors said that this was the wish of Iceland's Communists and the feeling of other people. Conditions in Iceland - from which Britain was partly to blame - might make Iceland's withdrawal from N.A.T.O necessary, but "I hope it never comes to this", said Mr. Thirs.
