  • Description

Uruguayan security forces who have been waging an "internal war" against the Tupamaros guerrillas, recently uncovered a serious of hide-outs in Montevideo, which included an arms cache and what was described as a major medical centre. The hideouts were shown to the press in the Uruguayan capital on Tuesday (23 May).

The hospital under a building near the centre of Montevideo was said to have been equipped with enough medical equipment to allow the left-wing guerrillas to practice major surgery. It included an operating theatre, anaesthetic and X-ray equipment, air conditioning and a recuperation room for three patients.

Also shown to the press was an underground arsenal found in a typical Montevideo apartment house. Concealed beneath the floors were rifles and machine guns, as well as material for making bombs. Yet another underground hiding space was revealed to the press on Tuesday -- and this one was in what appeared to have been an ordinary house.

The state of "internal war" against the Tupamaros was extended on May 15 for an additional 45 days after a long parliamentary debate. It had originally been scheduled to run for 30 days. The Defence Minister told parliament that in the original 30 days, 256 arrests had been made, 570 firearms had been seized and 700 houses had been searched.

The Tupamaros have brought Uruguay to the verge of chaos with political assassinations and kidnappings.
