The new Greek ambassador to Rumania, M. Aristoteles Phrydas, presented his credentials to President Nicolae?

  • Description

The new Greek ambassador to Rumania, M. Aristoteles Phrydas, presented his credentials to President Nicolae Ceausescu on Saturday, July 22, in a ceremony in Bucharest.

The Ambassadorship has been vacant for some time, and the new appointment is seen as part of the general easing of tension between the Greek regime and several European countries.

When the right-wing Army group seized power in Greece in April 1967, -- and, after some time, still seemed unable to restore democratic rule -- many European nations reacted with harsh criticism, headed by the Scandinavians, and diplomatic relations with Greece were in some cases reduced to Charge d'Affaires' level. In retaliation, Greece reduced imports from some countries and took other financial measures.

But now that the Greek regime appears to have consolidated its position, many of the same European nations are having second thoughts and resuming diplomatic and trade relations with Greece.

Apart from Rumania, other countries who have recently resumed negotiations on several levels with the Greek regime include France, West Germany, Albania, Sweden and Italy.
